Atlanta -- Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) received the endorsement of the Georgia Sierra Club for the July 15 Democratic Primary election.
“Mother Nature has no better friend in Congress than John Lewis,” said Georgia Sierra Club Political Committee Chair Norman Slawsky.
“The Sierra Club was one of the first organizations to endorse John Lewis when he first ran for Congress,” Slawsky said. “We have continued to endorse John Lewis’ candidacy since then because of his dedication to preserving and protecting the environment.”
“I am deeply grateful to the Sierra Club and its leadership for their many years of support,” said Rep. Lewis. “I have always stood with them and they have always stood with me on protecting our environment. As I have said in the past, we have a right to know what is in the food we eat, what is in the water we drink and what is in the air we breathe.”
Rep. Lewis currently serves as Chairman of the Ways & Means Oversight Subcommittee which conducts oversight of all programs within the jurisdiction of the full Ways and Means Committee.
The Sierra Club operates a trio of environmental initiatives: "Smart Energy Solutions," which aims to shift Americans from reliance on fossil fuels and nuclear power to a safe, clean energy future built on efficiency, renewable fuels and innovative technologies; "America's Wild Legacy," which works to protect wildlife and their habitats and to preserve wild and special places; and "Safe and Healthy Communities," which aims to free communities from pollution of water, air and toxic threats.
Since 1892, the Sierra Club has been working to protect communities, wild places, and the planet itself. It is the oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States.
