This law requires voters to show a photo identification at the polls before voting.

These are the six acceptable forms of identification under this law:

1. A valid Georgia Driver,s License which was issued by the appropriate state agency
2. A valid Georgia Voter Identification Card (issued under Code Section 21-2-417.1)
3. A valid United States Passport
4. A valid employee identification card with a photograph of you that was issued by any branch, department, agency, or entity of the United States Government, the State of Georgia, a Georgia county, Georgia municipality, or Georgia board authority
5. A valid United States military identification card that includes a photo of you
6. A valid tribal identification card that has a photo of you

If you do not have any of these and need to purchase the new Georgia Voter Identification Card you can do so at a state DMV office for $20. This service is not available at all state DMV offices so please check your local DMV to be sure. Once obtained these cards are valid for 5 years.

Georgia law states that a voter who requests an absentee ballot by mail is not required to provide a reason why he or she is voting absentee.

You may also request an absentee ballot in person at the Registrar's Office during the period of Monday through Friday the week immediately proceeding the week of the election. Again, Georgia law states that you do not have to provide a reason for absentee voting, but you must request an absentee ballot prior to the election.

Examples of circumstances that require absentee voting:

• You are 75 years of age or older
• You will be absent from your voting precinct from 7:00am-7:00pm on election day
• You have a physical disability that prevents you from voting in-person, or you are a constant caregiver of a person with a disability
• You are observing a religious holiday which prevents you from voting in-person
• You are an elected official
• You are required to remain on duty in your precinct for the protection of the life, health, or safety of the public

How Can I Apply for an Absentee Ballot?

Absentee ballots can be requested as early as 180 days before an election, however there will be no absentee ballots issued on the day before or the day of the election. You must turn in your completed absentee ballot and submit it to The County Board of Registrars, Office by 7:00pm on Election Day.

The application must be in writing and must contain the address to which the absentee ballot will be mailed. In addition, you must submit sufficient identification information. This identification information is determined by the state of Georgia. Please consult your County Board of Registrars, for further information.

Assistance with the Absentee Ballot

If you are a physically disabled or illiterate voter you may receive assistance from another voter in the same county or municipality or from relatives who can write an application for you and deliver the absentee ballot. If you don,t have a relative or friend who lives in the same county or municipality to help you then a notary public can be provided. Any person who assists another person to vote using an absentee ballot must complete an oath in accordance with the law to ensure that the ballot was completed as the voter desired.
